The NBA Finals…good job.

Posted in Just plain ole' fun by Sean C. on June 18, 2008

I’ve never been to Boston, but honestly I kind of don’t want to go.  Everything I loathe is there.  The Red Sox, the Patriots, the Celtics, the Boston accent, Samuel Adams beer, the blatant racism that some of my friends have experienced, and tea(like seriously, they were dumping tea into the ocean and calling it a party.  Plus, one of the men organizing it was Samuel Adams) and even Harvard.  Ok, I take that last one back but that’s my one exception.  Watching the NBA Finals was a gut-wrenching experience for me.  I wanted L.A. to win, even though I knew that the Celtics were better overall.  If I was a fan of sports based purely on the athletic abilities of the players, then of course the Celtics would be my choice for the champions.  However, I am also a fan of history.  What NBA fan doesn’t know the name Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Bill Russell?  We all know that the Finals this year was super-hyped due to how many times these two franchises have met in the Finals(11).  Those were the “real” rivalry days not what has happened over the last two weeks but that’s besides the point.

The point that I’m trying to bring up is actually no point at all.  I wanted to write about how the 80’s Celtics were predominately white while the 80’s Lakers were black.  However, the coach for the Celtics during that time was a former Celtic K.C. Jones(black man) who represented a turning point for that franchise and the coach for the Lakers was Pat Riley.  I also wanted to write about how Red Auerbach, the manager for the Celtics was under heat for his team being too white but he drafted the first African-American into the league.  Then there’s Bill Russell’s accounts of blatant racism he experienced while being the so-called “black puppet” for the franchise while they beat L.A. back in their first meeting in ‘59.  However, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t trade any of his rings back in.  I appreciate the fact that I saw an embrace between him and Kevin Garnett after the win.  So there’s nothing more I can really say about my personal hatred for the Celtics besides the fact that I really wanted Kobe to have a ring without Shaq and……I’m from NY.
